The Brook’s Clown
Achates 360
A cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary collaboration between artistes from France and Singapore, The Brook’s Clown is a one of-its-kind, hard-cover, large format photographic-and-comic artbook, combining on-site photography of renowned French theatrical talents Jean Lambert-wild and Marc Goldberg (in their roles as Gramblanc and Hatoff) at Singapore’s landmarks, taken by local director Ler Jiyuan, with illustration by leading figure in the local contemporary comics scene, Koh Hong Teng.
It incorporates philosophical undertones of one’s inner battles between materialism and intrinsic values, distractions from one’s life purpose, and the pursuit of happiness.
The artbook will be launched at its own exhibition at the National Library in conjunction with the Voilah! Festival, and will be the final installation of the Talking Clown Trilogy.
About the story
Hatoff (Marc Goldberg) has organised a very important meeting in Singapore and excitedly calls upon his old friend, Gramblanc The Clown (Jean Lambert-wild) to join him. Soon however, because of Gramblanc’s antics, Hatoff forgets every detail about the meeting.
Led by Gramblanc’s impetuousness, Hatoff’s gluttony, and some mythical creatures, the pair begin their whimsical adventure through Singapore’s local landmarks and familiar heartlands – from Raffles Place MRT, Bishan Park, to Teck Ghee Court Market & Food Centre and more. Some locales even served as part of their storyline, for example, Hatoff’s frightening and immersive experience at Haw Par Villa’s Ten Courts of Hell. After a colourful adventure, did Hatoff and Gramblanc make it to the meeting? Or did a twist of fate bring them elsewhere?
Hear from Marc (Hatoff) about their adventures at Singapore’s landmark, Haw Par Villa, and prepare for entry into the Ten Courts of Hell (featured at The Brook’s Clown exhibition at Level 9 of the Singapore National Library from now until 30 Nov ’19).
